Obasanjo was jailed during Abacha’s rule under allegations of plotting a coup, though he maintained his innocence. Throughout his imprisonment, Stella campaigned globally, traveling to places like the Vatican and France to advocate for his release. Her efforts proved instrumental, and following Abacha’s death, Obasanjo was freed by the succeeding administration led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar. Obasanjo went on to become Nigeria’s president.

Now 87, Obasanjo expressed profound gratitude for Stella’s support, saying, “She left no stone unturned to ensure my release… My late wife went everywhere to ensure that I came out of prison alive.” He added that her commitment to his cause had been invaluable to him and his family, and that no tribute would ever fully honor her role.

Obasanjo also thanked the government and people of Edo State for honoring Stella by renovating the hospital. Reflecting on past collaborations with Edo State leaders, he praised Governor Godwin Obaseki for his dedication to completing the hospital, remarking that it would provide first-class healthcare and marking Obaseki’s term as both well-begun and well-ended.
