Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Thursday that Russia is open to peace talks with Ukraine, based on a previously negotiated deal between Moscow and Kyiv in 2022. The deal, which was discussed in Istanbul, was eventually abandoned, but Putin expressed his willingness to revisit it during a forum in Vladivostok.
Putin emphasized that Russia has always been open to negotiations with Ukraine, stating, “Are we ready to negotiate with them? We have never refused to do so, but not on the basis of some ephemeral demands, but on the basis of those documents that were agreed and actually initialled in Istanbul.”
Despite the ongoing war, which has lasted for over a year, and international sanctions against Russia, Putin has continued military operations in Ukraine. Russia has previously indicated that Kyiv’s military activities in Russia’s Kursk region hindered potential peace talks, but this latest statement from Putin suggests a willingness to engage in negotiations under specific conditions.
Both countries remain entrenched in conflict, but this could signal a potential diplomatic path forward.
