The United States Mission in Nigeria has released a comprehensive voting guide to assist American citizens residing in Nigeria in preparation for the upcoming U.S. general elections on November 5, 2024. In a statement shared on its X (formerly Twitter) handle, the mission outlined the necessary steps for U.S. citizens abroad to ensure their votes are counted in the elections, which will feature the presidential race, congressional elections, and various state and local contests.
The guide emphasizes three key steps for American voters in Nigeria:
- Request a Ballot: U.S. citizens must visit the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) website at FVAP.gov to request their ballot. The website provides detailed instructions and resources for voters abroad.
- Complete the Ballot: Once received, voters should carefully follow the instructions to fill out their ballots.
- Return the Ballot: Voters can return their completed ballots either by dropping them off in a postage-paid envelope at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, or by mailing the ballots themselves.
The U.S. Mission advised voters to complete these steps as early as possible to avoid potential delays in the voting process.
The November 5 election is expected to be a tightly contested race, particularly in the presidential election, which will feature a key battle between former president Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Early voting has already begun in three states—Virginia, Minnesota, and South Dakota—with Kamala Harris campaigning on issues such as abortion. Early voting, which has faced criticism from Donald Trump due to his unsubstantiated claims regarding the 2020 election, is likely to play a significant role in the 2024 race.
