Former Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Prince Mathew Kolawole, has stated that President Bola Tinubu requires more time to address the challenges plaguing Nigeria’s economy, which he described as inherited in a poor state. Speaking in an interview with journalists in Lokoja, Kolawole urged Nigerians to remain patient, as the president is working hard to rectify the country’s systemic issues.
Kolawole highlighted that Tinubu inherited a “rotten economic system” and that his administration is implementing reforms, albeit painful, that are essential for Nigeria’s long-term progress. “The ongoing reforms may be biting hard, but it is a process to take us to our dreamland,” he said.
Reflecting on Tinubu’s first year in office, Kolawole acknowledged the economic challenges but expressed confidence in the president’s vision. He noted that Tinubu’s policies, though difficult, are necessary for the country’s development, particularly in areas like food production.

Kolawole also addressed public concerns regarding rising fuel and electricity costs, assuring that Nigerians will soon experience the positive effects of Tinubu’s reforms. He stressed the need for continued support for the president, who he believes is genuinely committed to the welfare of the nation.
On another issue, Kolawole commented on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) investigation of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello. He expressed disappointment over what he described as the “persecution” of Bello, who, according to Kolawole, has significantly contributed to the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly during the 2023 general elections.
Kolawole defended Bello, highlighting his sacrifices for the party, including his support for Tinubu after losing the APC presidential primary. He suggested that Bello’s current challenges were driven by political motives, with some in power attempting to undermine his growing influence. Kolawole called the situation unfortunate, emphasizing that power ultimately belongs to God and urging those involved to refrain from undermining rising politicians.
