Protesters to Storm Lagos Assembly, Demand Justice in Mohbad's Death Investigation

Nollywood actor and human rights advocate, Yomi Fabiyi, has announced plans to lead a peaceful protest on Monday, September 30, 2024, at the Lagos State House of Assembly, demanding justice for the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

Fabiyi shared the protest details on his Instagram page, calling for the Lagos State Government to establish a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death. He alleged that those responsible for the singer’s death are attempting to cover up the case by spending large sums of money to destroy evidence and create distractions.

Fabiyi pointed out that CCTV cameras in and around Mohbad’s home in Royal Pine Estate, Lekki, were operational and suggested the footage might be stored remotely. He expressed frustration at the police for not retrieving this crucial evidence and urged the Lagos Assembly to step in and ensure a proper investigation.

The actor urged Nigerian citizens to join the protest, emphasizing the importance of unity and peaceful conduct during the demonstration.

Mohbad, who passed away on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27, was a former signee of Marlian Music, the record label owned by Naira Marley. His death has been surrounded by controversy, leading to an official investigation by the Lagos State Police Command. A special 13-man team was set up to investigate, which resulted in the arrests of Naira Marley and Lagos socialite Sam Larry.

An autopsy was performed after Mohbad’s body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, to determine the cause of death. However, during a Coroner’s Court hearing on May 15, a pathologist testified that the autopsy could not conclusively determine the cause of death due to the body’s decomposition.

Adding to the confusion, PUNCH Metro exclusively reported discrepancies regarding the toxicology report. The US-based lab, NMS Labs, denied conducting the tests despite claims from the Lagos State Government that the samples were sent there. In response to an inquiry, NMS Labs confirmed they did receive postmortem samples related to Mohbad’s case from another Pennsylvania-based lab, ITSI Biosciences, and completed toxicological testing in April 2024.

Despite these findings, the inconsistencies have fueled further demands for clarity and justice in Mohbad’s case.
