An Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan has ordered the remand of three individuals, including former queen Naomi Silekunola and broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat, in connection with a tragic stampede that claimed the lives of 35 minors during a children’s Christmas party in Ibadan.

Court Proceedings

Presiding over the case on Tuesday, Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi ruled that the defendants be remanded at the Agodi Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Oyo State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP). The case was adjourned to January 13, 2025, for mention.

The defendants — Naomi Silekunola (31), broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat (51), and school principal Fasasi Abdullahi (56) — face a four-count charge including conspiracy, murder, and negligence causing harm. The charges stem from allegations that the defendants failed to ensure adequate safety measures during the event.

Prosecutor’s Allegations

Prosecuting counsel, Inspector Sikiru Opaleye, told the court that the defendants organized a funfair event at Islamic High School, Bashorun, but failed to provide a secure and conducive environment, leading to a deadly stampede.

The stampede, which occurred between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. on December 18, 2024, reportedly resulted in the deaths of 35 children aged five months to 13 years, including an eight-year-old girl, Sofiat Musiliu.

The charges, according to Inspector Opaleye, contravene Sections 324, 311, 517, and 344 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.

Key Details and Arrests

The tragic incident occurred during a funfair carnival organized by WINGS Foundation (Women In Need of Guidance and Support), a non-governmental organization founded by Naomi Silekunola, with media support from Agidigbo FM.

Following the incident, the Oyo State Police Command arrested eight individuals for their roles in the event. The suspects include:

  • Naomi Silekunola
  • Oriyomi Hamzat
  • Fasasi Abdulahi
  • Genesis Christopher (24)
  • Tanimowo Moruf (52)
  • Anisolaja Olabode (42)
  • Idowu Ibrahim (35)
  • Abiola Oluwatimilehin (25)

Police Statement

Police spokesperson, Superintendent Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the incident in a statement, reporting 35 fatalities and six critically injured individuals receiving medical care.

“Sequel to the stampede incident recorded on Wednesday, 18/12/2024, at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, the Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform the public that eight persons have since been arrested for their various involvements,” the statement read.

The police also transferred the case to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Tragic Aftermath

The event, which was intended to bring joy to children during the Christmas season, ended in heartbreak for families and communities. Authorities have assured the public of heightened security patrols to prevent similar tragedies and maintain public safety.
