The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended four individuals suspected of vandalising streetlight poles in various parts of Abuja. The arrests were made during routine night patrols conducted by the command’s Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Tactical Team.
The NSCDC FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, disclosed this while parading the suspects on Friday, November 29, 2024, in Abuja. He emphasized the agency’s unwavering commitment to protecting critical infrastructure in the FCT.
Details of the Arrests
The first arrest occurred on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at around 1:00 a.m. near Eden Garden in the Utako area. Two suspects, Japheth Adams (21) from Zango Kataf Local Government Area in Kaduna State, and Friday Ojo (51) from Ojo Local Government Area in Lagos State, were caught in the act of vandalising a medium-sized streetlight pole.
The second arrest took place on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at about 2:00 a.m. near the Moshood Abiola Stadium at the National Hospital Junction. Two additional suspects, Ibrahim Aliyu (19) from Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, and Hassan Abdullahi (23) from Zaria Local Government Area in Kaduna State, were apprehended while dismantling two large streetlight poles.
Recovered Items
During the operations, the following items were seized from the suspects:
- One medium-sized streetlight pole
- Two large-sized streetlight poles
The suspects are currently undergoing investigation, and the authorities have assured the public that due process will be followed to ensure justice is served.
NSCDC’s Warning to Vandals
Commandant Odumosu reiterated the NSCDC’s zero-tolerance policy towards vandalism and warned all criminal elements, including vandals and scavengers, to desist from their activities or face severe consequences. He noted that the command has intensified 24-hour surveillance and patrols across Abuja and its suburbs to curb such criminal acts.
He stated:
“The FCT is a no-go area for vandals, scavengers, and hoodlums who operate under the cover of darkness to destroy public infrastructure or attack unsuspecting commuters. I urge these individuals to repent, relocate, or face the full wrath of the law.”
Appeal for Public Support
The commandant also called on residents of Abuja to support the NSCDC’s efforts by providing credible information on criminal activities. He assured the public that the safety and confidentiality of informants would be prioritized.
