In protest against the Band A tariff hike, workers represented by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have taken action, causing disruptions at various electricity distribution company (DisCo) offices. The protests, occurring on Monday, saw workers preventing their counterparts from resuming work for the day.

In Lagos, demonstrators gathered at the corporate headquarters of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, demanding a reversal of the Band A tariff. Meanwhile, in Oyo, protesters converged on the office of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, picketing the premises.

To ensure the maintenance of law and order, police presence was noted at the protest sites. The NLC and TUC issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to revert the revised tariff. However, the Federal Government cautioned against such a reversal, arguing that it could have adverse effects on the power sector and urged Nigerians to endure the temporary challenges.

In parallel developments, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) advised the Federal Government to eliminate electricity subsidies across other tariff bands, citing the move as necessary to safeguard the economy.
