The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning that 12 states, including Kogi, are at high risk of flooding in the coming days due to expected moderate to heavy rainfall and potential water releases from the Lagdo Dam.
In its recent weather alert, NiMet identified the states prone to flooding as Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Rivers. The agency emphasized that runoff water from the Lagdo Dam, combined with rainfall, could cause rivers and streams to overflow, leading to potential flooding.
The alert also highlighted that the soil in these areas is already saturated, increasing the likelihood of significant flooding. The warning comes with a call for residents to take immediate proactive measures.
NiMet urged residents to:
- Ensure access to clean drinking water, as floodwaters may contaminate water sources and heighten the risk of waterborne diseases.
- Stock up on essential supplies to prepare for potential disruptions.
- Stay connected with authorities and emergency services, and assist vulnerable members of the community, such as children and the elderly.
The forecasted flooding is expected to peak starting from September 20, and NiMet advises citizens to be on high alert and take necessary precautions to protect lives and property.
