The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has approved new rates for the issuance of national driver’s licences and vehicle number plates, with the price changes set to take effect on November 1, 2024. The revised fees are intended to improve the quality and security features of these identification documents to meet international standards.
Under the new structure, Nigerians will pay N15,000 for a three-year motor vehicle driver’s licence, while a five-year licence will cost N21,000. Motorcycle and tricycle drivers will also see an increase, with a three-year licence priced at N7,000 and a five-year licence at N11,000.
For vehicle number plates, the cost for both standard private and commercial plates will now start at N30,000. Fancy number plates will be available for N400,000, while motorcycle plates will cost N12,000. Dealer vehicle number plates will be priced at N100,000.
Government-issued number plates will also see price adjustments. Government fancy vehicle plates will now cost N120,000, with standard plates set at N80,000. For motorcycles used by government entities, fancy plates will cost N50,000, and standard plates will be N20,000.
The JTB highlighted that these changes will enhance security features, aiding in better identification of both drivers and vehicles. Olusegun Adesokan, Secretary of the JTB, stressed the importance of public awareness regarding the new rates. He noted that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) will be responsible for conducting public sensitisation campaigns ahead of the November 1 implementation date.
The FRSC is expected to play a key role in informing the public about these changes to ensure a smooth transition to the revised fees.
