Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has unveiled a N1.85 billion recapitalization grant aimed at empowering 37,000 women petty traders across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The announcement was made during a flag-off ceremony held in Abuja, which marked the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Economic Empowerment Programme.
In her address, delivered by Mrs. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, the FCT Mandate Secretary for Women Affairs, Senator Tinubu revealed that 1,000 women from each state and the FCT would receive a grant of N50,000 each. This initiative, she noted, is designed to help these women overcome the challenges faced by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria, while also fostering job creation and business growth.
“Through the Renewed Hope Initiative Economic Empowerment Programme, we are providing 1,000 pre-selected women petty traders per state with a grant of N50,000 each to recapitalize and contribute to the growth of the economy,” said the First Lady. She emphasized that this grant is part of her commitment to economic empowerment for women, which remains a core objective of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).
The event, held simultaneously across the 36 states, underscores the government’s awareness of the difficulties faced by SMEs and its commitment to supporting women traders in expanding their businesses and enhancing their livelihoods.
Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, the FCT Minister of State, also praised the First Lady’s efforts, describing the initiative as a significant step towards improving the well-being of women traders. Represented by her Special Adviser on Social Investments, Maijidda Musa, Dr. Mahmoud highlighted the impact of the Renewed Hope Initiative in areas such as education, health, social investment, and agriculture, commending Senator Tinubu for turning this vision into a reality.
