NEWSAN Seeks Partnership With Kogi Govt to Improve Water Supply and End Open Defecation

The Society for Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN), Kogi chapter, has expressed its willingness to collaborate with the Kogi State Ministry of Water Resources to enhance water quality and end open defecation in the state. This was disclosed during a courtesy visit to the state’s Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr. Yahaya M.D Farouk, on Thursday in Lokoja.

The State Coordinator of NEWSAN, Pastor Mrs. Roseline Alabi, emphasized the group’s commitment to supporting the ministry in achieving its water supply goals and improving sanitation in Kogi State. Alabi highlighted the importance of increasing access to clean water, reducing pollution, and achieving equitable sanitation and hygiene for all by 2030, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6.

Alabi commended the ongoing efforts of the Commissioner, noting that his work has significantly improved water distribution in the state. She also praised Governor Ahmed Ododo for appointing capable leadership to the ministry, stating that the governor’s commitment to water resources is vital for the well-being of Kogi’s estimated 4.2 million residents.

In response, Commissioner Farouk expressed gratitude for NEWSAN’s support and underscored the importance of partnerships with civil society organizations to address the challenges in Kogi’s water sector. He noted that 95% of efforts to make water accessible to the state’s residents have been completed and assured that all communities will soon be reconnected to the water supply system.

Farouk also urged communities to protect water facilities from vandalism, which has been a major setback for the ministry. He called on civil society organizations to help promote the need for protecting government resources to ensure sustained development.

During the visit, the NEWSAN team decorated Commissioner Farouk with the “Clean Nigeria” emblem, recognizing him as an ambassador for water and sanitation efforts in the state.
