Residents of Karaworo Street in Lokoja, Kogi State, were left shocked on Wednesday morning when a day-old baby boy was discovered abandoned in a drainage near the Kutepa Juma’at Mosque. The incident occurred around 5 am, with the mother of the child yet to be identified.

A local resident, 45-year-old Talatu Ibrahim, was the first to discover the infant. She recounted hearing the baby’s cries from outside her window and rushed out to find the newborn lying in the gutter. “I heard the cry of a baby behind my window, and when I went outside, I saw a newborn baby boy dumped in the gutter. I immediately raised an alarm, and some neighbors came to help,” she shared.

Following the discovery, the baby was taken to a nearby house for care, while efforts were made to locate the child’s mother. Muhammed Abubakar, founder of MOHAB People’s Care Foundation, who was present at the scene, confirmed that attempts to find the mother were unsuccessful. The Kogi State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development was contacted to take custody of the baby.

Later in the day, officials from the Ministry visited the site and took the baby into their care for proper support and protection.
