
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded significant achievements in Kogi State, arresting 284 suspects and seizing 5,232.575 kilograms of illicit drugs between January and December 2024.
Announcing the accomplishments during a press conference in Lokoja on Monday, the NDLEA Commander for Kogi State, Mr. Mustapha Yahuza, also disclosed the confiscation of counterfeit currency worth $2 million and N20.4 million in various denominations.
Key Achievements
Yahuza described the agency’s efforts as “remarkable,” highlighting the destruction of 10 hectares of marijuana plantations in the state. Despite numerous challenges, the NDLEA attributed its success to the professionalism, dedication, and hard work of its personnel.
“The more than five tonnes of drugs seized include Cannabis Sativa, Tramadol, Diazepam, Methamphetamine, Rohypnol, and Exol-5, along with other substances such as Cocaine, Codeine, Pethidine Injection, Ergometrine Injection, Nitrous Oxide, and Heroin,” Yahuza stated.
Legal Outcomes
As part of its enforcement efforts, the NDLEA secured 91 convictions for drug-related offenses, with several other cases currently under trial at the Federal High Court in Lokoja.
Community Engagement and Education
In addition to enforcement, the NDLEA has been actively involved in drug abuse prevention and education initiatives. Yahuza revealed that:
- 51 schools and organizations were sensitized about the dangers of drug abuse.
- 195 individuals referred by investigative units underwent counseling as part of the agency’s drug demand reduction and advocacy programs.
Commander’s Warning
Yahuza issued a stern warning against drug consumption and trafficking, emphasizing the severe social, economic, and health impacts on individuals, communities, and the nation at large.
Next Steps
The seized drugs and counterfeit currency have been transferred to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
