In response to a viral video depicting extortion activities on a pedestrian bridge in Yaba, Lagos State, two suspects have been arrested by the state government. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced this development via his social media handle on Thursday.
The suspects, whose identities were not disclosed, were observed imposing a N100 levy on pedestrians with luggage utilizing the bridge. Wahab, upon viewing the video, promptly ordered their arrest and assured that they would face legal consequences.
According to Wahab, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has been directed to take immediate action against the offenders. He emphasized that those attempting to evade arrest would be pursued diligently.
Furthermore, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps recently apprehended 63 individuals for engaging in illegal street trading and crossing highways. This move aligns with the government’s earlier warning to prosecute individuals who opt to cross major highways instead of utilizing designated pedestrian bridges.
The swift action taken by Lagos authorities underscores their commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of residents. Such initiatives aim to deter criminal activities and promote compliance with established regulations for public safety.
