The Kogi State Government has announced plans to begin profiling all legal mining companies operating in the state as part of efforts to address insecurity in the mining sector. This decision was made during the state executive council meeting held on Wednesday in Lokoja, chaired by Governor Usman Ododo.
The government also temporarily suspended all mining activities due to the increasing presence of bandits and criminal elements associated with the sector.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, explained that the move is aimed at reducing crime and ensuring proper regulation of mining operations.
“This action will allow for a thorough clean-up of the sector, which is crucial in eradicating criminal activities,” Gegu said. He also emphasized the need for proper data on mining operations and highlighted the state’s collaboration with federal mines officers and security agencies to ensure compliance with legal mining standards.
The government urged all mining companies to cooperate with the temporary suspension, stressing the importance of tackling insecurity in the region.
