Kogi State Launches New Comprehensive Programme to Fight Against Tuberculosis

The Kogi State Government, in partnership with Stop TB Partnership Nigeria, has initiated a revitalized campaign to combat tuberculosis (TB) across the state. This effort, aimed at eradicating TB, is spearheaded by Hajia Sefinat Ododo, the wife of the state governor, who has been appointed as the TB Champion for Kogi State.

Hajia Ododo, in her new role as the TB Champion of Peace, emphasized the importance of collective action in the fight against TB. She pledged to mobilize resources and support to raise awareness about the disease and ensure effective treatment for those affected. During the official launch of the TB Champion Campaign and Sensitization Programme in Kogi State, she called on local government chairmen and their spouses to join the initiative as local TB champions.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adeiza Adams, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to healthcare excellence. He highlighted the progress made in TB control, noting the successful partnerships with global organizations. Dr. Adams also emphasized the state’s investments in the health sector, particularly in enhancing hospitals and health centers that provide TB treatment.

He praised Hajia Ododo for her leadership in the fight against TB and commended Stop TB Partnership Nigeria for its relentless efforts since 2006 to eliminate TB in Nigeria. Dr. Adams also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to healthcare and the ongoing initiatives under Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo to revitalize primary healthcare centers across the state.

Dr. Barnabas Segun Isaac, the acting Permanent Secretary, described TB as a significant public health challenge, stressing the need for increased awareness and early detection. He highlighted the disease’s impact on individuals with weakened immune systems and noted key symptoms such as persistent cough.

Dr. Komolafe Rotimi, the program manager of Stop TB Partnership Nigeria, expressed his gratitude to all partners and commended the First Lady of Kogi State for her leadership in this crucial campaign against TB.
