In a decisive move to curb unauthorized mining activities, the Kogi State government has implemented a comprehensive ban on all forms of illegal mining across its 21 local government areas. The announcement came from Bashiru Gegu, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, during a press briefing on Friday.
Commissioner Gegu emphasized that strict measures are being taken to regulate mining activities in the state. He stated, “Nobody or company will be allowed to explore or engage in mining of any mineral in the state unless they possess a license from the Federal Government or cooperative certificates for artisanal miners along with valid community development agreements.”
Highlighting the importance of adhering to legal requirements, Gegu urged individuals and companies involved in mining activities to obtain the necessary approvals to operate within the state. He made it clear that security agencies have been directed to take swift action against any entity or company found operating in violation of these regulations.
Gegu categorically identified those operating without the requisite federal government-approved licenses as illegal miners. He stressed the state government’s commitment to enforcing the ban rigorously and stated that legal actions would be taken against anyone found breaking the law.
In conclusion, the Commissioner emphasized that Kogi State would no longer tolerate any form of illegal mining. The government is determined to uphold the rule of law and ensure that mining activities within the state are conducted in accordance with the necessary regulatory frameworks.
