The Kogi State Government has called on the federal government for immediate intervention after floods submerged 70 communities, leaving thousands of homes and farmlands destroyed. The appeal was made by Deputy Governor Joel Salifu during an inspection of Edeha, one of the worst-hit areas in Kogi Local Government Area.

Salifu, who also chairs the 2024 Kogi State Flood Disaster Response Committee, acknowledged the state’s efforts but stated that the scale of the disaster was beyond its capacity to handle alone. “Despite our preparedness, the situation in Edeha and other affected communities has overwhelmed us. Over 70 communities have been flooded, and the extent of damage to homes and farmlands is still being assessed. The intervention of the Federal Government is urgently needed,” he said.

While no casualties have been reported, most of the affected residents have relocated to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps established by the state. The deputy governor assured that the government is committed to alleviating the suffering of the displaced and has set up 48 IDP camps to support the victims.

The Executive Secretary of the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (KOSEMA), Mourktar Atimah, also pledged that the state would continue to care for those affected by the floods.

Abdullahi Isah, the chief of Edeha community, echoed the deputy governor’s plea for federal assistance. He emphasized that the flooding is a recurring problem in the region, affecting between 70 and 80 communities. “We appreciate the state government’s swift response, but we urgently need the Federal Government, corporate bodies, international organizations, and individuals to step in and help us,” Isah said.

During the visit, the deputy governor and his team, which included Kogi’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, also met with the traditional ruler of Kotonkarfe, the Ohimegye, to discuss the government’s ongoing response efforts.

The flood, which has caused widespread damage to farmlands and homes, underscores the urgent need for coordinated disaster relief efforts in the state.
