The Kogi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is moving to suspend Senator Dino Melaye, labeling him a liability to the party. Led by Ibrahim Dansofo, PDP elders in the state have urged the local executive committee in Ijumu to begin immediate suspension proceedings against Melaye to restore the party’s integrity and focus on more viable leadership.
The push for suspension comes after Melaye accused the acting national chairman of the PDP, Iliya Damagum, along with Samuel Anyanwu and Umar Bature, of irreparably damaging the party. Melaye’s remarks were met with strong condemnation from the party elders, who characterized his accusations as hypocritical. They claimed that despite being granted a governorship ticket by the party, Melaye’s political influence has waned to the point where he could no longer win even a local councillor position.
Dansofo and the elders argued that Melaye’s continued association with the PDP serves only to negotiate personal gains with the ruling party rather than contribute positively. They blame Melaye for the party’s current struggles, describing his nomination as a significant misstep.
The elders have called on prominent PDP figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, to reconsider their support for Melaye. They urged these leaders to distance themselves from someone they described as a “bondage” and a “big-time liability” for the party. Additionally, they asked the Nigerian public to disregard Melaye’s recent remarks, dismissing them as the desperate words of a politician whose relevance has long faded.
Finally, the Kogi PDP emphasized its determination to move forward, rebuild its reputation, and reclaim its strength as a formidable political force in the state. The stakeholders also demanded that Melaye account for the billions he allegedly collected in the name of the governorship election.
