Idowu Ibikunle, the lawmaker representing Yagba West in the Kogi State House of Assembly, has raised alarm over the abduction of Bukola Awo, one of his constituents in the Ejiba area of the state. Ibikunle revealed during a press conference in Lokoja that the abductors have demanded a ransom of N20 million for her release.
Describing the harrowing situation, Ibikunle expressed anguish over the plight of the innocent girl and emphasized the urgency of securing her safe return. Despite efforts by the police, vigilantes, and other security agencies to locate the girl’s whereabouts, she remains in captivity as her abductors’ hideout remains unknown.
In addition to Awo’s abduction, Ibikunle highlighted a recent incident in Ejiba where gunmen, believed to be non-indigenous to Kogi State, raided the local market and kidnapped several individuals. He underscored the growing concern over the encroachment of herders into interior villages and forests, posing a significant security threat to residents.
While commending Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his proactive measures in addressing insecurity, Ibikunle stressed the need for further action to ensure the safe release of all hostages. He called for the reinforcement of the State Vigilante Network and advocated for the enactment of stringent laws against kidnapping, similar to those in neighboring states.
Urging the government to intensify efforts in combating kidnapping, Ibikunle emphasized the importance of deploying additional vigilantes to vulnerable areas and conducting thorough profiling of herders within the state. He concluded with confidence in the governor’s commitment to resolving the crisis and securing the release of those held captive by kidnappers.
