The Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KGIRS) has apprehended 44 individuals for allegedly engaging in unauthorized tax collection activities within the state. This was disclosed by the KGIRS Chairman, Sule Salihu Enehe, during a media briefing in Lokoja on Wednesday.
Enehe emphasized that the agency has achieved a 70% success rate in reducing illegal tax collection through targeted efforts, including a public awareness campaign across Kogi’s three senatorial districts. Billboards have been placed statewide to educate citizens on the issue and discourage unauthorized tax payments.
While the problem has not been entirely eliminated, Enehe noted that these efforts have greatly curbed illegal tax activities. “The fight against these unauthorized collectors is ongoing,” he affirmed, underscoring KGIRS’s commitment to sustaining these measures.
In terms of revenue collection, KGIRS has raised over N19 billion as of September, working toward its 2024 target of over N30 billion. Enehe attributed this success to strong management and staff commitment, expressing confidence that the agency will meet its annual goal despite economic challenges in the state.
