The Kogi State Government has issued a plea for immediate assistance from the Federal Government and international donor agencies as devastating floods have submerged over 200 communities, leaving nearly two million people homeless.

During a press briefing on Monday at Kotonkarfe, the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Fanwo, described the situation as a growing “humanitarian crisis” and urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to act swiftly.

“We are in a dire emergency situation. The flood disaster here is overwhelming, with over 200 communities submerged and close to two million people displaced,” Fanwo said. “We have opened 68 IDP camps, but they are insufficient. Schools, hospitals, and infrastructure have been destroyed.”

Nine out of Kogi’s 21 Local Government Areas, including Lokoja, Adavi, Ofu, Ajaokuta, Idah, and Ibaji, have been affected by the disaster. Fanwo assured the public that the state government, through its Flood Disaster Response Team led by the Deputy Governor, is committed to providing support but emphasized that external aid is crucial for the scale of the emergency.
