Kogi Govt Clears Drainages, Warns Residents Against Indiscriminate Refuse Dumping

In anticipation of the upcoming rainy season, the Kogi State Government, led by Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has initiated a comprehensive program to clear drainages and prevent potential flood disasters across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Honorable Oluwasegun Joseph, highlighted these efforts during a press briefing after overseeing drainage desilting activities at Lokongoma Market, Phase 1, Lokoja.

Joseph reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Kogi citizens by prioritizing public health and environmental sustainability. He emphasized the crucial role of maintaining clean drainages in promoting sanitation, healthy living, and facilitating unimpeded water flow, particularly in urban areas like Lokoja.

Recognizing the imminent threat posed by blocked drainages due to indiscriminate refuse dumping, the commissioner urged residents to refrain from such practices. He emphasized the enforcement of laws prohibiting the dumping of waste in waterways and announced plans to enact stricter regulations to curb this behavior.

In addition to drainage clearance, the government has mandated the Ministry of Environment to embark on environmental beautification initiatives. Commissioner Joseph expressed optimism that these efforts, under the leadership of Governor Ahmed Ododo, would result in a visibly cleaner environment across the state.

The proactive measures taken by the government received commendation from residents, including Mrs. Falilat Omeiza and Mr. Richard Adebayo, who praised the commissioner’s proactive approach in averting potential flooding.

Market traders, represented by Mrs. Ronke Adams, also expressed gratitude for the government’s intervention in clearing drainages within market areas.

Accompanying the commissioner during the inspection were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Jibrin Sheidu, along with other ministry officials, underscoring the government’s collective effort in addressing environmental challenges and ensuring the well-being of Kogi State residents.
