John Dramani Mahama has been sworn in as the 6th President of Ghana’s Fourth Republic in a grand ceremony held at Independence Square, Accra, on January 7, 2025. This historic occasion marks Mahama’s return to the presidency, making him the first leader in Ghana’s history to reclaim the position after losing a re-election bid in 2016.

President Mahama’s inauguration follows his decisive victory in the 2024 general elections, signaling a strong mandate from the Ghanaian people. In his inaugural address, he pledged to uphold the trust placed in him, focusing on economic recovery, national unity, and inclusive development. He also reaffirmed his commitment to good governance, transparency, and addressing the nation’s most pressing challenges.
The event was attended by 21 heads of state and numerous dignitaries from across Africa and beyond. Among them were Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, Liberia’s George Weah, and other prominent leaders. Former Ghanaian presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings were also present, alongside immediate former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his wife, Samira Bawumia.
This significant moment not only marks a new chapter for Ghana under President Mahama’s leadership but also reinforces the nation’s democratic legacy on the African continent.
