The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has prohibited the celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day in the South-East region. In a statement released on Monday, the separatist group warned that anyone found participating in any activities marking Independence Day would be deemed an enemy of the land.

IPOB urged Igbo people to either continue with their normal business activities or remain indoors if they prefer but strictly advised against partaking in any event related to the celebrations. The group emphasized that despite the significant role played by the Igbo in Nigeria’s struggle for independence, the union had been detrimental to them.

The statement, issued by the group’s Directorate of State, reaffirmed IPOB’s stance against Nigeria’s national holiday, which they termed “Zoo Nigeria’s” Independence Day. The group reiterated its rejection of Nigeria’s “forced unity” and called for the restoration of an independent Biafra.

“Biafrans should refrain from participating in Nigeria’s Independence celebrations globally. While some prominent Igbo figures were instrumental in Nigeria’s 1960 independence, the price paid in Igbo blood has been disproportionately high,” the statement read.

IPOB further instructed that no Nigerian flags should be flown within Biafran territory and advised parents to keep their children away from any Independence Day events in schools or public spaces. The group made it clear that they are closely monitoring the region to ensure compliance.

The directive aligns with IPOB’s long-standing efforts to distance the South-East from Nigeria and advance the establishment of a sovereign Biafran state.
