In a tragic turn of events, a footballer lost his life after being struck by lightning during a match in Indonesia. The shocking incident, captured on video, occurred at Siliwangi Stadium in Bandung, West Java, on Saturday afternoon, February 10th.

Septain Raharja, a 35-year-old player from Subang, was participating in a friendly football match between 2 FLO FC Bandung and FBI Subang when tragedy struck at approximately 4:20pm local time.

Despite efforts to save him, Raharja succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to a nearby hospital. Reports indicate he suffered severe burns from the lightning strike.

An analysis by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) revealed that the lightning bolt originated from a cloud just 300 meters above the stadium.

This unfortunate incident marks the second time in the past year that an Indonesian footballer has been struck by lightning. In a previous incident in Bojonegoro, East Java, a young player was struck during the Soeratin U-13 Cup in 2023. Fortunately, medical intervention saved the player’s life after suffering cardiac arrest.

These incidents serve as sobering reminders of the unpredictable dangers faced in sports, and our hearts go out to the families and communities affected by these tragedies.
