Gunmen attacked the Umunze Police Station in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday, killing two police officers in the process. The attackers, suspected to be part of a proscribed armed group, launched the assault in the early hours, using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and firing at the station.
Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, stating, “Two police operatives on duty lost their lives during the gun battle as they attempted to resist the attackers.” The bodies of the officers have since been recovered and taken to a morgue.
Following the attack, joint security forces comprising the Police, Nigerian Army, Navy, and other agencies, responded swiftly, recovering five unexploded IEDs from the scene. Efforts are currently underway to track down the suspects.
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, visited the site of the attack for an assessment and called on anyone with information about the incident to report to the authorities, assuring that their identities will be protected.
