Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has unveiled new mining equipment in Lokoja and announced the acquisition of 15 mining licenses by the Kogi State Government, signaling a bold step towards economic diversification and industrial growth.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony on Friday, Governor Ododo described the development as the dawn of a new era for the state’s solid minerals sector. He said the licenses and equipment would enable Kogi to officially join the league of states actively tapping into Nigeria’s vast mineral wealth.

“This is a strategic move to harness our natural resources and reduce reliance on federal allocations,” the Governor stated. “With these 15 licenses, Kogi is set to commence large-scale exploration and mining, driving sustainable economic growth.”

He noted that Kogi is rich in over 30 solid minerals, including gold, lithium, limestone, and coal—many of which remain untapped in commercial quantities. The new initiative, he said, will not only boost the state’s internally generated revenue but also create jobs and improve livelihoods.

Governor Ododo reaffirmed Kogi’s readiness to become a key player in Nigeria’s extractive industry, adding that the mining initiative would place the state on a path of economic self-reliance.

“We are taking our future into our own hands. This is just the beginning,” he added.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, described the ministry as a vital revenue driver for the state. He emphasized the importance of equipment, policies, and regulatory frameworks in building a robust mining sector.

“The Kogi State Solid Mineral Processing Company Limited has already secured 15 mining licenses, paving the way for immediate exploration,” the Commissioner confirmed.

The event marks a significant milestone in Kogi’s journey toward becoming a hub for solid mineral development in Nigeria.
