Ghana has announced ambitious plans to establish a visa-free entry policy for all African visitors by the end of 2024. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo unveiled this initiative during the 2024 Africa Prosperity Dialogue held in Ghana, emphasizing the importance of facilitating the free movement of people, goods, and services across the continent.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted the significance of adopting such policies continent-wide to enhance trade and achieve economic transformation in Africa. He shared insights into the steps taken by Ghana to facilitate travel for conference attendees, including a 50% reduction in visa acquisition fees and the provision of visas on arrival for participants.
In his statement, President Akufo-Addo affirmed the Ghanaian government’s commitment to ensuring visa-free access for all Africans visiting the country. He disclosed that the process had commenced and is expected to be fully implemented later in the year.
The move reflects a broader trend across Africa as nations recognize the importance of dismantling barriers that impede intra-continental interactions. Efforts include the removal of trade tariffs within sub-regions and, in this case, the elimination of visa restrictions to foster increased connectivity.
In a notable development last November, Ghana and South Africa unveiled a visa-waiver scheme, granting citizens the freedom to travel between the two countries without the need for visas. The forthcoming visa-free policy in Ghana is aligned with the continent’s progressive approach to fostering closer ties and collaboration among African nations.
As of now, only a handful of African countries offer visa-free entry for all citizens across the continent. Ghana’s initiative signals a significant step toward fostering unity, cooperation, and increased mobility within Africa.
