The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced extensive repairs on federal highways across the country to ensure smoother traffic flow during the upcoming festive season. This major road maintenance initiative, known as “Operation Connect to Your Destination” Phase 2, is led by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and was officially flagged off in Kano State.
FERMA’s Managing Director, Engr. Chukwuemeka Agbasi, outlined the project’s ambitious goals. The agency aims to patch 18,850 square meters of road surface, repair over 12,000 failed sections, overlay 2,700 square meters of road, and make 653 kilometers of highway motorable by the end of the exercise. Agbasi explained that the initiative focuses on reducing traffic bottlenecks, especially between northern and southern routes, to improve travel times and relieve congestion during the festive period.
The program has identified high-traffic areas as priority zones for repairs, enhancing commuter experience and road safety. In addition to improving infrastructure, the project is expected to create over 12,000 jobs, thereby contributing to economic growth.
Engr. Sani Abdulkadir, head of FERMA’s Direct Labour Department, stated that the roadworks are set for completion by mid-December to avoid disruptions during the holiday season.
Kano State’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander, Umar Matazu, represented by Deputy Corps Marshal Abdulsalam Kabiru, praised the initiative and advised drivers to exercise caution and maintain safe driving practices once the repairs are completed.
