EFCC Probes Bribery Claims Involving Officers, Bobrisky, and VeryDarkMan

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into bribery allegations involving its own officers, with Nigerian social media personalities Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, and Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, being invited for questioning.

The EFCC’s Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, ordered the investigation after Bobrisky alleged in a viral video that some EFCC officers accepted a bribe of N15 million from him to drop money laundering charges. The video, shared by Martins Otse (VeryDarkMan), sparked widespread attention, prompting the EFCC to take immediate action.

Bobrisky had originally faced six charges related to naira abuse and money laundering amounting to N127,780,877.98. The money had reportedly been deposited into his company’s Eco Bank account between September 2021 and April 2024. However, two of the charges were withdrawn after the EFCC reached an agreement with Bobrisky’s legal team. The EFCC’s counsel, Suleiman Suleiman, informed the court that the commission had agreed to drop counts 5 and 6, while counts 1 to 4 remained.

Despite the dismissal of some charges, Bobrisky was convicted of currency abuse. In his viral video, however, he claimed that EFCC officers had accepted N15 million to drop the more serious money laundering charges against him.

In response, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed in a statement that both Bobrisky and VeryDarkMan have been invited to the EFCC’s Lagos Directorate to assist in the investigation. The EFCC chairman has formed a team of investigators to thoroughly examine the bribery allegations.

Oyewale assured the public that the investigation would be transparent, stating, “The EFCC is committed to its core values of integrity, courage, professionalism, and collaboration. The results of this investigation will be made public once concluded.”

This move aims to restore public confidence in the EFCC, ensuring that any potential misconduct by its officers will be addressed.
