Lent, Ramadan: Avoid Crowded Gatherings, Remain Vigilant - DSS Tells Nigerians

The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a stern warning to individuals and groups planning protests on June 12, Democracy Day, to refrain from engaging in any violent or disruptive behavior. As Nigerians prepare to commemorate Democracy Day, the DSS emphasized the importance of peaceful protest and the avoidance of actions that could compromise national security.

In a statement released on Tuesday night, signed by Dr. Peter Afunanya, Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, the DSS revealed that it has received intelligence on plans to incite violence and disrupt public order during the protests. The agency pledged to uphold public safety and national security, urging citizens to resist any encouragement to participate in lawless acts.

“The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to plans by certain individuals and groups to stage physical protests in some parts of the country on 12th June 2024. These protests are designed with sinister objectives to coincide with the Democracy Day Celebration,” Afunanya stated.

While recognizing citizens’ rights to assembly and expression, the DSS cautioned against using these freedoms to undermine public safety and national security. “The determination by some non-state actors to incite mass disaffection through demonstrations that may turn violent will not be tolerated,” the statement added.

The DSS encouraged those with grievances to use appropriate channels and procedures to express their concerns. “Displeased persons are rather encouraged to appropriately channel their grievances through the right channels and procedures,” Afunanya advised.

The DSS also congratulated the government and citizens on the occasion of celebrating 25 years of unbroken democracy, calling for continued patriotism, unity, and commitment to building a better Nigeria. The agency assured the public of its continued collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including other security agencies, to maintain peace and protect lives and property nationwide. “Law-abiding citizens are enjoined to go about their businesses without fear,” the statement concluded.
