A construction company has employed 200 Nigerian graduates who were sponsored to study in China, emphasizing the importance of skilled manpower in sustaining railway projects across the country. This initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s National Local Content Policy for Railway Development, aimed at enhancing indigenous participation in the sector.
The Minister of Transportation highlighted the 2018 introduction of the Advocacy for Enhanced Local Content in Nigeria’s infrastructural development, part of Nigeria-Chinese Bilateral Agreements. He noted the historical significance of the rail transport subsector from the 1960s to the 1980s, which was crucial for transporting agricultural products, livestock, and solid minerals to export ports.
Mamman Mustapha, one of the employed graduates from Borno State, urged the government to establish more vocational centers to support the younger generation, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds. Mustapha recounted the challenges faced during his studies in China, including a year-long Chinese language course and adapting to local cuisine. Despite the difficulties, his passion for contributing to Nigeria’s development kept him motivated. He expressed a desire to return to China for post-graduate studies.
The transportation sector, crucial for economic growth, is undergoing reforms to incorporate expertise in transport management, logistics, and administration. This development reflects the government’s commitment to utilizing trained professionals in advancing the nation’s infrastructure.
