Breaking: World Bank Approves $1.57bn Loan to Boost Nigeria’s Healthcare, Others
The World Bank has approved three loans amounting to $1.57 billion to support Nigeria’s efforts in strengthening healthcare, improving governance, and building resilience to climate change impacts like floods and droughts.
According to a statement released on Monday, September 26, 2024, the loans will focus on improving human capital by enhancing health services for women, children, and adolescents, while also addressing environmental challenges through safer dam management and improved irrigation systems.
Breakdown of the Funding:
- $500 Million for Governance and Service Delivery Improvement: This portion of the funding will be dedicated to the HOPE-GOV Programme, which will address governance issues constraining the delivery of education and health services. The program aims to strengthen the systems and procedures of the Nigerian government in critical human development sectors, particularly in basic education and primary healthcare.
- $570 Million for Primary Healthcare: The Primary Healthcare Provision Strengthening Programme (HOPE-PHC) will receive $570 million to bolster healthcare services, with a particular focus on women, children, and adolescents. This program aims to improve access to essential healthcare services and improve human capital outcomes by ensuring better primary healthcare delivery across the country.
- $500 Million for Sustainable Power and Irrigation (SPIN) Project: The Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria (SPIN) Project will support the improvement of dam safety and the management of water resources for hydropower and irrigation in various areas of Nigeria. This will help build resilience to climate change, particularly by reducing the impacts of floods and droughts, and also contribute to the management of water resources for both agricultural irrigation and hydropower generation.

Focus on Human Capital and Climate Resilience:
The World Bank stressed that these projects aim to enhance Nigeria’s human capital development by addressing critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. The initiative also highlights a commitment to addressing governance weaknesses in delivering essential public services.
In summary:
- HOPE-GOV Programme: Strengthens governance for better service delivery in education and health.
- HOPE-PHC Programme: Improves primary healthcare for women, children, and adolescents.
- SPIN Project: Enhances dam safety and water resource management for irrigation and hydropower, tackling climate change impacts.
The approval reinforces the World Bank’s continued support for Nigeria’s development goals in both human capital and climate adaptation.
