The Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization, Afenifere, has expressed support for Senate President Godswill Akpabio amid allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The group has urged the Senate Committee to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter while cautioning against hasty conclusions.

In a statement signed by its National Organizing Secretary, Kole Omololu, and made available to journalists on Monday, Afenifere questioned the timing of the allegations, suggesting they might be linked to a disciplinary measure recently taken against Senator Natasha in the Senate.

Afenifere Questions Timing of Allegations

The organization commended Akpabio’s leadership, stating that he has played a vital role in ensuring political stability and legislative-executive harmony under Nigeria’s current democratic governance. It expressed concern that the allegations could be a reaction to a recent disciplinary action against Senator Natasha.

“We in Afenifere appreciate the political stability engendered by the calm, thoughtful, and patriotic leadership of the National Assembly under Senate President Godswill Akpabio,” the statement read.

“We are hopeful that such a committed patriot will not be sacrificed on the altar of unproven allegations.”

While Afenifere acknowledged the need for an investigation, it warned against politicizing the issue, emphasizing that the allegations should be carefully examined to determine whether they stem from personal or political grievances.

“The nation must be careful in assessing these allegations, as they may or may not result from animosity toward that disciplinary measure,” the group stated.

Call for Fair Investigation

Afenifere urged the Senate Committee to handle the case with fairness and transparency, ensuring that the truth is established without bias.

Without passing judgment on Senator Natasha or her accusations, the group reaffirmed its support for Akpabio’s leadership, citing his contributions to governance and stability in Nigeria.

“Afenifere extends the right hand of fellowship to Senator Godswill Akpabio and commends him for being a steady hand during these times of political, economic, and social reforms under the Renewed Hope agenda,” the statement concluded.
