62 Camp Gas Canisters Triggered Fire at Ikate-Elegushi, Lekki Makeshift Structures

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has revealed that a total of 62 camp gas canisters were responsible for igniting the fire that ravaged makeshift structures in the Ikate Elegushi area of Lekki, Lagos State, destroying approximately two hectares of land.

According to Amodu Shakiru, the Head of Public Education at the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the fire outbreak occurred at Star Road, by Horizon Heights, Ikate-Elegushi, and Lekki Lagos. The incident, which involved residential makeshift structures, was attended to by the Oniru and Lekki Phase II fire stations.

Upon receiving the distress call at around 22:50 hrs, the fire service arrived at the scene promptly at about 23:00 hrs. The firefighting efforts lasted until approximately 00:15 hrs, during which the fire spread due to the ignition of 62 camp gas canisters. The mop-up exercise concluded at about 03:05 hrs.

While the fire was confined to the makeshift structures, saving the adjoining highbrow properties, one male adult sustained serious injuries. However, he was promptly treated by the Lagos State ambulance service and is reported to be in stable condition.

The cause of the fire was attributed to negligence, highlighting the importance of proper handling and storage of combustible materials. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service continue to emphasize the need for vigilance and adherence to fire safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
