
At least 41 people are feared dead following a boat accident in Gummi town, Zamfara State, early Saturday morning. The boat, which was transporting 53 farmers to their fields, capsized due to overloading, according to eyewitnesses.
Abubakar Muhammad, an eyewitness, revealed that only 12 people, including the boat’s captain, were rescued alive. “We did our best to save them, but tragically, 41 passengers perished,” he said.
Alhaji Na’Allah Musa, the Sole Administrator of Gummi Local Government Area, confirmed the incident, stating that the boat’s captain had warned the passengers about the overloading, but they refused to comply.
The Emir of Gummi, Justice Lawal Hassan (rtd), expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, extending his condolences to the victims’ families and praying for their strength in this difficult time.
Rescue operations are ongoing to recover the missing passengers.
