The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made in a statement released on Sunday in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.

In his message, the minister congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, describing it as a significant milestone in the country’s political history.
“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future is assured,” the statement read. “The last 26 years tell the story of our resilience, strength, and courage — and a hope renewed more than ever.”
Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that democracy thrives on constant improvement and open participation, reaffirming the commitment of the Renewed Hope administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to upholding democratic principles. He stressed that the government remains dedicated to ensuring that the will of the people continues to guide Nigeria’s political, economic, social, and cultural development.
