The Kogi State Government has warned that approximately 250,000 people across nine communities are at risk of being displaced by potential flooding this year. The alert follows flood predictions for 2024 by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), highlighting rising water levels in the Rivers Niger and Benue.
The Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Engr. Joseph Oluwasegun, revealed this during a stakeholder meeting on Monday. He outlined the state’s proactive efforts, which include establishing 42 internally displaced persons (IDP) camps across eight local government areas, specifically targeting nine flood-prone communities.
During the meeting, stakeholders discussed flood management strategies, emergency response protocols, and evacuation plans to minimize the impact of potential flooding. Oluwasegun stressed the need for collaboration among all parties and called for increased public awareness in flood-prone areas to ensure timely relocation and prevent severe hardships.
The Executive Secretary of the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (KOSEMA), Alhaji Mouktar Atimah, also announced the establishment of an Emergency Operation Center to coordinate an effective response to the flood threat.
